Two Score - And More: A Musical Recollection 1890-1930
Dell
When "Two Score" moved to Theatre In The Dell on Simcoe Street, Toronto, Marie Baron had to leave us, heading on to a stellar musical theatre career particularly in Gilbert & Sullivan roles at the Stratford Festival. She has been a beloved educator at Sheridan College for many years. Her "Two Score" roles were taken over by Carole Warren.
Carole
Here's Carole in the Music Hall segment singing the naughty "But I've Never Lost My Last Train Yet". "When looking at the clock, I received a dreadful shock On discovering the sun had gone and set! So a telegram I wrote: 'Dear mama, I've missed the boat!' But I haven't lost my last train yet! Oh no!"
Jack
By 1980, Jack had already been in more than 2000 roles on radio, TV and stage across North America and in Europe, Russia and Australia. I was a newbie, and he was unfailingly kind and supportive. A thoughtful director, a superb host. There was nothing better than making him laugh his big booming laugh.
Home
Carole Warren giving a moving rendition of "Keep The Home Fires Burning" in the First World War segment. Carole's career has since taken her from festival performaces and tours with Roger Whittaker to becoming an award-winning CBC Radio producer, writer and broadcaster. Long after Two Score, Carole married Steve Kennedy who had performed on my first demo-tape of songs along with Dr. Music. Carole is a wealth of musical information and a good friend.
Banff
While the show was running in Stratford, ON, Howard and I were on Musical Theatre faculty at the Banff School of Fine Arts. The School annually presented a smaller revue style show along with its larger main stage offering. "Two Score" was a great teaching vehicle - it could accommodate a "cast of thousands", doing all sorts of things. I'm sure you'll recognize some names here among the student performers: Stephanie Zimbalist, perhaps, or Loreena McKennitt. In "Two Score", Loreena sang "In My Merry Oldsmobile" - but it really wasn't "her thing". Instead, she had brought her Celtic harp, got herself an after-hours gig at a local pub, and proceeded to blow us all away with that ethereal voice.
Touring
The touring cast. You probably know some or all of these four, as they have continued performing on stage and screen (both large and small) ever since: Jim White, Jayne Lewis, Wanda Cannon, and Elias Zarou. It was not an easy tour, but they hung in and turned in wonderful performances at every stop - and even continued speaking to me afterwards!
